A regional public health program launched in 1991 after the health ministers of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Brasilia and resolved to control Chagas disease across their six countries by eliminating its principal vector, the triatomine bug Triatoma infestans, and by screening blood donations to stop transfusion transmitted infection. The initiative's strategy rested on historical and genetic evidence suggesting Triatoma infestans had spread into most of these countries relatively recently, within roughly the past century, making elimination of its domestic populations, rather than only reduction, a realistic goal across most of the affected region. Between 1990 and 2000 the initiative's vector control and blood screening work was credited with cutting estimated annual new Chagas disease cases across the region by more than 65 percent, from about 700,000 cases a year to fewer than 200,000, and interrupting transmission across large parts of the previously endemic area.
