Sudan Expanded Programme on Immunization

Sudan's Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), run by the Federal Ministry of Health, is the country's national routine childhood vaccination program, delivered with support from Gavi, UNICEF, WHO, Save the Children and the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network. Before Sudan's 2023 conflict, the program had achieved strong coverage, with third-dose pentavalent vaccine coverage reaching 93 percent and measles coverage 87 percent, and it has more recently introduced the malaria vaccine into routine immunization alongside measles-rubella and cholera vaccination campaigns; the conflict has since left over 70 percent of health facilities in affected areas non-operational, sharply reducing vaccination rates.
