Susan G. Komen, formerly Susan G. Komen for the Cure and originally the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, is a breast cancer organization in the United States that funds research, patient navigation, advocacy and patient care related to breast cancer. It was founded in 1982 in Dallas, Texas, by Nancy Goodman Brinker, who named the organization after her sister Susan Goodman Komen, who died of breast cancer in 1980 at age 36, in the belief that Susan's outcome might have been better had she known more about the disease and its treatment. The organization has invested nearly 1.1 billion US dollars in more than 2,800 research grants, and sponsors the Race for the Cure series of 5K runs and fitness walks, which began in Dallas in 1983 with 800 participants and has grown to more than 150 races across four continents.
