Tanzania National Malaria Control Programme

Tanzania's National Malaria Control Programme, known as NMCP, operates under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, serving as the country's focal point for planning, coordinating and mobilizing resources against malaria. The programme states its vision as a society free from malaria and its mission as ensuring equitable access to sustainable, quality, effective, safe and affordable malaria preventive and curative services, and it works with the Prime Minister's Office for Regional Administration and Local Government to coordinate implementation across every level of the national health system, from dispensaries to hospitals. Its current National Malaria Strategic Plan, covering 2021 to 2025, aims to transition the country toward malaria elimination in phases by 2030, with a national target of cutting malaria prevalence in children under five from 7.5 percent in 2017 to below 3.5 percent by 2025, alongside separate targets for high-risk areas, from 15 percent to 7.5 percent, and low-risk areas, from 1 percent to 0.5 percent or lower. The programme organizes its work around three core strategic approaches, integrated malaria vector control, malaria diagnosis, treatment and preventive therapies, and surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, and Tanzania's semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago runs a separate, more advanced strategic plan aimed at pre-elimination under its own 2013 to 2018 strategy.
