A nongovernmental, nonprofit organization founded April 6, 1982 by former United States president Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter, in partnership with Emory University, and based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Carter Center's health program addresses neglected tropical diseases, most notably leading the campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease, which fell from an estimated 3.5 million annual cases in 1986 to just 14 cases by 2023, and it has also worked against river blindness, trachoma, lymphatic filariasis and malaria, distributing more than 500 million doses of the drug Mectizan and helping build more than one million latrines to interrupt disease transmission.
