The Water and Sanitation Extension Program, known by the initials WASEP, is an initiative of the Aga Khan Planning and Building Service, Pakistan, launched in 1997 to provide clean drinking water and hygienic sanitation facilities in Pakistan's Northern Areas and Sindh province, aiming to prevent the high incidence of waterborne diseases in disadvantaged communities. The program combines potable water supply infrastructure, sanitation facilities, gray water drainage systems, quality management protocols and health and hygiene education, emphasizing community participation in which villagers contribute local materials and labor while WASEP provides engineering expertise and training. WASEP has installed more than 9,200 latrines across 225 villages, benefiting over 165,000 people, with an independent evaluation finding approximately a 25 percent reduction in diarrhea incidence, and the program has been recognized with the 2005 Alcan Prize for Sustainability, worth one million US dollars, the 2008 Dubai International Award for Best Practices, and a shortlisting for the Energy Globe Award's Water category in 2009.
