WHO Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2013-2020

A World Health Organization framework endorsed by the World Health Assembly in May 2013 through resolution WHA66.10, built to carry out commitments made at the September 2011 United Nations High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases. The Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2013-2020 targets four major disease groups, cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes, and four shared behavioral risk factors, tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful alcohol use, working toward a stated vision of a world free of the avoidable burden of noncommunicable disease. It set out a global monitoring framework of nine voluntary targets and twenty five indicators for countries to track progress against, giving governments, WHO and the wider public health community a shared reference point for national noncommunicable disease strategies worldwide; a mid-course evaluation later found gaps against several of its own targets, but the plan defined a common vocabulary and reporting framework that national NCD strategies, including several minted separately on this atlas, continue to cite directly.
