World Stroke Day

Chronic Disease Prevention Program

An annual observance held on October 29 to underscore the serious nature and high rates of stroke, raise awareness of its prevention and treatment, and improve care and support for survivors, with organizations worldwide holding events emphasizing education and testing on the day. The event was established in 2004 at the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada, with the proclamation formally incorporated in October 2006 after the International Stroke Society and the World Stroke Federation merged to form the World Stroke Organization, which has organized the day since and declared stroke a public health emergency in 2010. The World Stroke Organization maintains World Stroke Day as part of a year-round campaign of advocacy, policy work and outreach on stroke, with goodwill ambassadors including cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, former Miss Egypt Dalia El Behery and cyclist Alberto Contador.
