A Zimbabwean government water, sanitation and hygiene program launched with a 50 million dollar grant from the United Kingdom's Department for International Development and managed by UNICEF, aimed at improving equitable access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene practices for a country where about 70 percent of the population lives in rural areas. The Rural WASH Programme targeted reduced diarrhoeal disease and improved productivity for more than 4.19 million people across 42 rural districts spanning all 8 of Zimbabwe's rural provinces, and it is supported by the Rural WASH Information Management System, a nationally designed planning and monitoring platform now operating in seven of the eight provinces. Despite the programme's scale, national data continue to show rural sanitation access lagging, with improved sanitation coverage estimated at only around 35 percent, underscoring how much of the access gap the programme was built to address remains open.
