A regional malaria control program, created in 2001 by countries sharing the Amazon basin, with technical support from the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization and funding from the United States Agency for International Development, managed through USAID's South American Regional Infectious Disease Program based in Peru. The initiative coordinated country specific malaria prevention and control activities across 11 participating South and Central American nations, including Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, French Guiana, and later Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Between 2000 and 2012, six of the participating countries, Belize, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Suriname, achieved reductions in malaria incidence of more than 75 percent, with Brazil, Colombia and Peru projected to reach the same reduction by 2015.
