Brazil's national vaccination program, known as the Programa Nacional de Imunizacoes, established by the Ministry of Health on September 18, 1973, in the wake of the country's successful smallpox eradication campaign, and given legal force under Law No. 6,259 in 1975. Created during Brazil's military dictatorship, the program brought together vaccination activities that had previously been scattered across separate government agencies and jurisdictions under one national command, coordinating immunization policy for the whole country. Over the following five decades the program grew from offering four vaccines, serums and immunoglobulins to 48, and its results include certification of Brazil as free of wild poliovirus circulation and the elimination of rubella virus transmission, alongside major reductions in cases and deaths from other vaccine preventable diseases.
