Egypt National Tuberculosis Control Programme

Egypt's National Tuberculosis Control Programme is run by the Ministry of Health and Population and operates through 34 hospitals and 123 chest disease dispensaries across the country, providing free tuberculosis treatment together with medical, social and psychological support, including specialized units offering a shortened six month regimen for drug-resistant cases. In 2024 the program detected 11,007 tuberculosis cases nationally, a rate of 9.2 cases per 100,000 people representing a 37 percent reduction since 2015, and treated more than 2.2 million patients that year across 48 chest disease hospitals equipped with modern diagnostic technology including 22 CT scan departments. The World Health Organization has recognized Egypt's program as a global model for tuberculosis control, and the ministry has set a 2030 goal of raising case detection above 90 percent and treatment success above 90 percent.
