An immunization initiative launched by the Government of India in 1995, with support from the World Health Organization and UNICEF, to eradicate poliomyelitis through repeated National Immunization Days on which oral polio vaccine is administered to every child under five, regardless of prior vaccination status. Mass campaigns were paired with house-to-house mop-up rounds in high-risk districts and intensive surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis. The programme immunized hundreds of millions of children in each round at its peak. India recorded its last case of wild poliovirus in January 2011, in West Bengal, and was formally certified polio-free by the World Health Organization in March 2014, a result widely credited to Pulse Polio's scale and persistence in a country that had once accounted for a large share of the world's polio burden.
