Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health

The Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health was announced by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in September 2010, valued at forty billion dollars over a five-year period, with the goal of saving the lives of sixteen million women and children by accelerating progress on the Millennium Development Goals covering child mortality, maternal health and major disease, which were advancing too slowly. Its launch gave rise to the Every Woman Every Child movement, which mobilized governments, the private sector, academia and civil society behind the strategy's goals, including preventing thirty-three million unwanted pregnancies, ending stunting in eighty-eight million children and protecting one hundred twenty million children from pneumonia by 2015. Its specific 2015 targets were not fully reached, but the effort was followed by reductions in child and maternal mortality of forty-nine and forty-five percent respectively from 1990 to 2013, preventing an estimated 2.4 million maternal and child deaths, and by a successor strategy for 2016 to 2030 that added adolescents as a target group.
