Indonesia National Tuberculosis Control Programme

Indonesia's national tuberculosis control program, which adopted the World Health Organization's directly observed treatment, short-course strategy, known as DOTS, nationwide starting in 1995, with DOTS initiation extended into Indonesian hospitals from 1999 onward. Following this nationwide DOTS adoption, the National Tuberculosis Control Program reached the international targets of detecting more than 70 percent of cases and successfully treating more than 85 percent of them, with case detection reaching 71 percent and treatment success reaching 90 percent by 2009, while tuberculosis mortality fell from 92 per 100,000 population in 1990 to 38 per 100,000 by 2008. In February 2010, Indonesia's president formally designated tuberculosis control as a priority of the country's medium-term national development plan in pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals, and the program has continued to strengthen its field network through partnerships with organizations including the Indonesia Tuberculosis Eradication Association, Family Welfare Training Units and other non-governmental organizations.
