Jhpiego

A nonprofit international health organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1973 under the name Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics, a name later shortened to the pronounceable acronym Jhpiego, and headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. Although initially recognized chiefly for its expertise in maternal health, Jhpiego's programs have since expanded to cover HIV and AIDS and tuberculosis treatment, malaria prevention, women's cancers, adolescent health, global health security, and nursing and midwifery training, delivered through work in more than 38 countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas. The organization emphasizes building the skills of local health workers and strengthening health systems so that improvements in care can be sustained by the countries themselves rather than depending on continued outside support.
