The Beyond Zero Campaign was launched by Kenya's First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on January 24, 2014 to complement the government's own efforts to eliminate maternal and child mortality and new HIV infections among children, built around the founding conviction that no woman should die while giving birth. Its central fundraising vehicle, the First Lady's Half Marathon, has financed 52 fully equipped mobile medical clinics that have been donated across all 47 of Kenya's counties, delivering vaccinations, antenatal care, HIV testing and treatment, care for sick children and parents, and strengthened emergency obstetric services to communities with limited access to fixed health facilities. Beyond its direct service delivery, the campaign is credited with sustaining national dialogue on maternal and child healthcare, cancer and HIV and AIDS, contributing to greater public awareness and concrete investment in these areas, and Margaret Kenyatta was named UN in Kenya Person of the Year in recognition of the campaign's impact on maternal and child health.
