Nepal Expanded Programme on Immunization

Also Known As EPI
Immunization Program

Nepal's national childhood vaccination program, initiated in the 1978/79 fiscal year not long after the World Health Organization established the global Expanded Programme on Immunization, and expanded to cover all of Nepal's 75 districts within about a decade of its launch. Structural changes to the health system slowed early progress, and national coverage did not reach roughly 80 percent until the year 2000, but coverage has since improved substantially: over 90 percent of Nepali infants now receive their diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccination series by 14 weeks of age. The current EPI schedule gives children BCG at birth, combined diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-hepatitis B-Hib and oral polio vaccines at 6, 10 and 14 weeks, inactivated polio vaccine at 14 weeks, measles-rubella vaccine at 9 months, Japanese encephalitis vaccine between 12 and 23 months, and tetanus toxoid for pregnant women, delivered as of the 2021-2022 official annual report through nearly 17,000 EPI clinics staffed by more than 50,000 female community health volunteers.
