Nigeria's national childhood vaccination effort, which traces to the country's adoption of the World Health Organization's Expanded Programme on Immunization framework in 1979 and was relaunched in 1984 after earlier vaccine supply problems were corrected, aiming to protect children against six major childhood diseases alongside a paired oral rehydration therapy effort against diarrheal disease. The program took its current name, the National Programme on Immunization, when it was renamed from the Expanded Programme on Immunization in 1996, and under Nigeria's return to civilian rule after 1999 it took on a particular focus on polio eradication. In 2007 the National Programme on Immunization was subsumed into the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, which has run Nigeria's immunization efforts since.
