Nigeria's national program against tuberculosis, leprosy and, since 2006, Buruli ulcer, established in 1989 as a division within the Department of Public Health of the Federal Ministry of Health to coordinate the country's tuberculosis and leprosy control efforts. The National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, known by its initials NTBLCP, is organized across Nigeria's three tiers of government, with a federal central unit responsible for policy development, resource mobilization, human and material resource development, technical support to state-level programs, and monitoring and evaluation of the program as a whole. The program has built substantial service infrastructure over its history, including more than 5,300 tuberculosis service points and 1,602 microscopy centers distributed nationwide, along with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Training Centre in Zaria, developed with considerable assistance from the Netherlands Leprosy Relief organization.
