It began in 1874 as a response to the suffering of people with leprosy in India, founded by an Irish teacher, and is today headquartered in Brentford, United Kingdom. The organisation operates across 27 countries spanning four global regions, running 16 hospitals, 14 of them in India along with one each in Bangladesh and Nepal, and its work includes reconstructive surgery, community-based rehabilitation, training of healthcare professionals, advocacy against discrimination and support for medical research. The Leprosy Mission states a goal of zero leprosy transmission, zero disability and zero discrimination for people affected by the disease by 2035.
