A nationwide immunization programme launched by the Government of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 1985, expanding an earlier 1978 Expanded Programme on Immunization. It delivers free vaccination against tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b and other diseases to children and pregnant women through government health facilities and outreach sessions. By volume it is one of the largest public health programmes in the world, targeting roughly 26 million newborns and 30 million pregnant women each year, delivered through the world's largest vaccine cold-chain and delivery network.
