Vietnam's national effort against malaria, which shifted strategy as the disease's burden changed: the country pursued outright eradication starting in 1976, but a severe resurgence in the mountainous and coastal provinces where roughly 80 percent of Vietnamese living in malaria-endemic areas were concentrated, including 144 outbreaks and nearly 5,000 deaths in 1991 alone, forced a shift back to a control-focused strategy that same year. Renewed progress since then let Vietnam adopt a National Strategic Plan for Malaria Control and Elimination for 2021 to 2025 setting a goal of eliminating malaria nationwide by 2030, and by mid-2026, 26 of Vietnam's 34 provinces and cities had been declared malaria-free, with national case counts falling by 97.76 percent between 2014 and 2024 to a record low of 246 cases in 2025.
