Zambia National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme

Sanitation Program

Zambia's flagship government program to extend water supply and sanitation access in rural areas, launched in 2006 as the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme, or NRWSSP, building on the 1994 National Water Policy and the Water Supply and Sanitation Act of 1997 that had begun the country's water sector reform. The programme's first phase ran through the period of Zambia's Fifth National Development Plan, 2006 to 2010, implemented on an area-based approach and funding four categories of activity: water infrastructure development, sanitation and hygiene education, institutional support and capacity building, and program management. Zambia created a dedicated Ministry of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection in 2016 to align the country's water, sanitation and environmental work, and in 2019 that ministry released a second-phase plan, NRWSSP II, covering 2019 to 2030 with an estimated cost of 1.8 billion dollars and the goal of raising rural water coverage to 100 percent and rural sanitation coverage to 90 percent.

Delivers Practice

Entity-backed identity for the program-kind enum value this public health program already carries, resolved to a health practice by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The program-kind fact itself stays on the program unchanged.
