The Zanzibar government's malaria control and elimination effort, run under the Ministry of Health Zanzibar's Directorate of Preventive Services and Health Education, which operated as the Zanzibar Malaria Control Programme until it was renamed the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme, or ZAMEP, in August 2013 to reflect its shift from control to elimination. A new round of interventions begun in 2003, combining indoor residual spraying, distribution of long lasting insecticide treated nets, assured access to treatment medicines and rapid diagnostic testing, cut malaria prevalence from 39 percent in 2005 to under 1 percent by 2011 to 2012. The programme also pioneered digital surveillance tools, developing the Malaria Epidemic Early Detection System in 2008 with the United States President's Malaria Initiative, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and RTI International, and building a malaria case notification platform in 2012 after prevalence in children five and under fell below 1 percent.
