The practice of administering a vaccine, a preparation containing a weakened or killed microorganism, or a protein or toxin derived from it, to prompt the immune system to develop protective immunity against a specific infectious disease. The World Health Organization estimates that vaccination currently prevents between 3.5 and 5 million deaths every year, and that over the 50-year period beginning in 1974 it prevented about 154 million deaths, including 146 million among children under five. When enough of a population is vaccinated against a disease, the reduced transmission this produces, herd immunity, also protects people who cannot be vaccinated themselves, such as those who are immunocompromised. The World Health Organization describes vaccination as the most effective method of preventing infectious disease, and widespread vaccination is credited with the global eradication of smallpox and the near elimination of diseases such as polio and tetanus across most of the world. The practice traces to Edward Jenner's 1796 smallpox vaccine, the first vaccine ever produced, and its name derives from the Latin vacca, cow, after the cowpox material Jenner used. In recent years some regions have seen rising cases of vaccine-preventable diseases linked in part to comparatively low vaccination rates driven by vaccine hesitancy.
