An epidemiological practice in which the occurrence and spread of disease in a population is continuously monitored in order to track its pattern of progression, predict and observe outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics, and limit the harm they cause, while building knowledge of the factors that contribute to them. A central component of modern disease surveillance is case reporting, in which individual diagnosed cases are recorded and aggregated so that public health authorities can see patterns as they emerge. Historically, case counts were gathered largely from hospitals, which saw most occurrences, and then collated and eventually published; modern communication technology has changed this considerably, letting organizations such as the World Health Organization and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report cases and deaths from significant diseases within days, and sometimes within hours, of their occurrence, reflecting considerable public pressure for this information to be made available quickly and accurately.
